Review #108 Mashbuild Uncut and Unfiltered: Bourbon

Score: 8.4 / 10

Distillery: Farm and Spirit

Type: Colorado Craft Bourbon

What's the deal with Mashbuild? Well a guy named Richard Anders who used to work for Jim Beam is blending barrels using Solera aging out in Elizabeth Colorado. His goal is to take a "flavor-first" approach with his whiskies while experimenting with all sorts of fun things. They are doing some pretty cool stuff and may likely become one of Colorado's best whiskey brands. If you are interested in learning more, I recommend checking them out here: https://farmandspirit.com/mashbuild/

Whiskey Review:

Nose: Cake frosting, caramel, seared wood, barnyard hay and black pepper.

Palate: Orange rind hits the palate then instantly turns into oily vanilla and chocolate with a hint of pipe tobacco that ramps up into a fiery pepper spice leaving the sensation of spritzing mineral water and caramel on the tongue.

Finish: Juicy and moderate in length. Cherry and watermelon intermingle with oak and black pepper. Finally only cacao remains.

Score: 8.4

Scale:

S+ Sensational - The Pinnacle (9.5+)

A - AXEceptional (astounding) (9-9.5)

B - bravo (step aBove average) (8-8.9)

C - competent (7-7.9)

D - disappointing (6-6.9)

F - flush it down the toilet (fail) (5.9 below)

Availability? Uncommon. Not widely available outside of Colorado at this point. Also, it is worth noting that this expression was one of 300 bottles. Many other blends will come from these guys though with the blend changing slightly from batch to batch as they figure things out.
