Review #110 1792 Full Proof: Bourbon

Score: 8.0 / 10

Distillery: Barton 1792 Distillery

Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

1792 joins other similar brands such as Four Roses, Basil Hayden's, and Old Grand Dad as a high rye bourbon (around 15%, others may be much higher). This treat however, is their barrel proof version coming in at 125 proof! The brand is named after the year that Kentucky became an official state. It doesn't get much more M'erican than that! If you check out the homepage you'll know that this expression has a long lineage that accompanies it.

While I wouldn't exactly say that 1792 is for everyone (I've seen a lot of haters and lovers), this expression generally rates on the higher side compared to the others. If you want to hear us trying this lineup in real time and here our notes on almost all of the rest of the core lineup, check out the Po It Up Whiskey podcast episode 16 right here!

Whiskey Review:

Nose: Cherry Cola (surgary and syrupy), vanilla, strong charred oak on the backend.

Palate: Oily and hot mix well with this expression. Isolated brown sugar with some oak. Overall, a bit lacking in diversity compared to other barrel strengths that I've had.

Finish: A nice long warm hug. The brown sugar evolves into more of a maple syrup. Long lasting before finally fading out as a tannic leather.

Score: 8.0

Scale:

S+ Sensational - The Pinnacle (9.5+)

A - AXEceptional (astounding) (9-9.5)

B - bravo (step aBove average) (8-8.9)

C - competent (7-7.9)

D - disappointing (6-6.9)

F - flush it down the toilet (fail) (5.9 below)

Availability? Uncommon. This is appearing more often than it used to, but you'll have to be on the lookout. I think this may be too hot for some un-seasoned barrel proofers. I wouldn't hunt too hard if you haven't had other similar proofers.
