Review #117 Ancient Age: Bourbon

Score: 7.4 / 10

Distillery: Buffalo Trace Distillery

Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

This guy finished second on our Po It Up Whiskey podcast episode 2 "Bugdet picks". What finished first? Well why don't you give it a listen right here!

I don't know if there is a lot to say here really, except believe it or not this is an allocated whiskey! No one behind you will punch you in the line to get it, but everything from Buffalo Trace is allocated including this is. So there you go starting your day off with a fun fact!

I do want to point out that at this price point it is great to actually have a "Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey". Generally you are going to get a lot of blends with neutral grain spirits. If you don't know what those are.... c'mon man the link is only two paragraphs above this. Get on over there!!!

Whiskey Review:

Nose: Lemon citrus, cake frosting, vanilla meets brown sugar (like a brown sugar butter cookie). There's definitely an astringent rye note that lies under the sweet scents.

Palate: Oily and somewhat watery with a lot of vanilla. As I swish, the whiskey becomes very sugary and almost granular/coarse on the tongue. A bit of lemon and orange rind surge up between sugary notes. The back end kicks up some burnt caramel and coats the palate with light black pepper.

Finish: Pepper, caramel, lemon rind, rye spice and light oak linger. Its slightly numbing and lightly tannic.

Score: 7.4

Scale:

S+ Sensational - The Pinnacle (9.5+)

A - AXEceptional (astounding) (9-9.5)

B - bravo (step aBove average) (8-8.9)

C - competent (7-7.9)

D - disappointing (6-6.9)

F - flush it down the toilet (fail) (5.9 below)

Availability? Common. Once again you're going to have to look low on the shelf, but if you are a baller on a budget, I don't think you'll be too disappointed. After all this is actually a pretty common well whiskey at a lot of bars that you may go to.
