Review #125 Yellow Spot 12yr: Irish

Updated: Mar 23, 2021

Score: 8.6 / 10

Distillery: Midleton Distillery

Type: Single Pot Still Whiskey

On some research it appears that Yellow Spot 12yr won the 2017 Flaviar Community Awards! What is that? I have no idea. It sounds completely made up for a brand to distribute samples that they have too many of in order to get other things from distributors......

However, this stuff is great and should not be interpreted that way at all. This is the older version of the core line, being about 2-3 years older on average than the Green Spot. It also is aged in Spanish Malaga casks if you have that small niche to check-off.

This bottle or the Red Spot should have won our Irish whiskey awards last year, but honestly we forgot about them. We just have too many bottles.

Whiskey Review:

Nose: Aromatic oils with light eucalyptus. Fresh cut grass, damp barnyard hay, black pepper, vanilla, sugar, dried fruit, peaches and wine.

Palate: Oily plum coats the tongue and leading with a heavy viscous vanilla. Potent red apple gives way to honey, coffee and a luscious chocolate. The mouthfeel is thick throughout and kicks up an enjoyable black pepper spice on the back-end.

Finish: Cacao, dark chocolate, oak, and an astringent note of rye spice. A delightful simmering spice sticks to the pits of the mouth. A touch of fruit mingles with barley before fading away. Moderate in tannins and length.

Score: 8.6

Availability? Common. Go to a larger store for this one, but this is one of the most common of the spots line. A little more than the green, but shoot, grab both!
