Review # 24 Buffalo Trace: Bourbon
Updated: Jun 19, 2020
Score: 8.4 / 10
Distillery: Buffalo Trace
Type: Kentucky Straight
Generally I'll buy a Buffalo Trace store pick anytime that I see one. Recently that I've heard they can be hard to find in certain markets - is that true in your experience? I like regular Buffalo Trace a lot and commonly mention it as one of my favorite budget picks. The store picks can range greatly from barely indistinguishable from regular Buffalo Trace to, "are you sure this is the same bourbon?" This one in particular ended up very similar to the normal buffalo trace, so either way if you're interested in this bourbon, it is definitely going to perform at its price point.

Whiskey Review:
Nose: creamy sweet corn, vanilla and big peanut notes. Brown sugar with tart rhubarb hiding in the background.
Palate: creamy and viscous mouthfeel - much thicker than previous expressions which tend to be oily. Waves of smooth and oaky vanilla cascade on the palate then blend seamlessly into stone fruit. The drinking experience ends with touches of orange rind and raisin.
Finish: light, juicy, lingers with subtle notes toasted oak and spice.
Notes: damn this good for a $25 bottle of whiskey. Knocked it up .1 on the scale because its so good for its value. I've had a few BT picks that have been incredible - this one is definitely outstanding. For my Denver friends the picks featured in the photo are from (left to right) - Philnor Liquors, Applejack, Molly's Lakeside, Tipsy's, Mile High Spirits, Total Wine (Denver location - front). Its worth noting that we had a BT pick from Central Park Liquors in Steamboat CO that didn't even make it one night camping. You know its good when its gone instantly!
Score: 8.4
Scale:
S+ Sensational - The Pinnacle (9.5+)
A - AXEceptional (astounding) (9-9.5)
B - bravo (step aBove average) (8-8.9)
C - competent (7-7.9)
D - disappointing (6-6.9)
F - flush it down the toilet (fail) (5.9 below)
Notes: Availability? Very Common. If you see a liquor store, it will be there. And if it's not, I'm not sure I would ever consider going there again.
