Review #28 Michter's Small Batch: Bourbon

Updated: Sep 29, 2020

Score: 8.6 / 10

Distillery: Michter's Fort Nelson

Type: Kentucky Straight

Right on the label, "pre-Revolutionary War quality standards dating back to 1753", let's you know they are and can make a great product. Even though I tend to dislike most marketing on bottles, because it can be tricky to know what's good marketing and what's not. This has quickly became a table whiskey in my house after avoiding trying it for some time. Ir's always nice to enjoy something that isn't a highly allocated whiskey. Immediately before this review my gf wanted this specifically and was upset when I said I only had enough for the review. She is increasingly hating all of this more because of that. If you don't want people to snap at you, you're going to need to let other finish off bottles HA! See the picture attached, it's basically gone!

If you're reading this review, don't hesitate on this one. Before you get out of your league trying more expensive and more allocated whiskey, get this one under your belt. Like I said with Eagle Rare 10yr, establish a base of what a reasonable whiskey should taste like to help you form good opinions later. To help you in your en-devours, check out episode 2 of our whiskey podcast Po It Up here. In the episode we list all of our favorite bargain picks even cheaper than this one.

Whiskey Review:

Nose: Caramel and oak are most prevalent. A hint of lemon rind, milled corn, and raisins

Palate: Vanilla and oak right at the front. honey / sweetness. A subtle barn hay. Very tannic, doesn't float on the tounge

Finish: Long and satisfying. Leather, corn sweetness, oak, peach. Peppery on the back end, but just the right amount

Score: 8.6

Scale:

S+ Sensational - The Pinnacle (9.5+)

A - AXEceptional (astounding) (9-9.5)

B - bravo (step aBove average) (8-8.9)

C - competent (7-7.9)

D - disappointing (6-6.9)

F - flush it down the toilet (fail) (5.9 below)

Notes: Availability? Common. Easy to find and enjoy. A great table whiskey to have around. If you like this, try to grab the Michter's 10yr. It comes with a bit of a price tag, and isn't easy to find, but it's worth it if you're looking to splurge or impress.
