Review #38 Compass Box - Peat Monster: Scotch
Updated: Jun 19, 2020
Score: 8.2 / 10
Distillery: Compass Box
Type: Blended Islay Single Malt
Blended whisky from Caol Ila, Laphroaig and others
The name speaks for itself. Set your nostrils and palette to peated! Not quite the peatiest whisky I have tried though, so mildly disappointed from that. This comes i around 94 ppm, which is a ways away from some variations of the Bruichladdich Octomore that have been measured around 258 ppm. Still, that being said, 94 is still very high compared to other Scotches on the Isle of peat.
In case you're wondering PPM (parts per million, though I prefer peats per million) is how your measure the phenol content of what is on the malt, not what ends up in the liquid. Aging also has a lot to do with the final product. Although, the PPM content is a big factor and most important measure of peat. Anyway, I'll digress and let you get your face in that peat!
Whisky Review:
Nose: Deep smoke, hint of brine and light fruit
Palate: Upfront pear, apple and fruit that blends into spice and cinnamon. Peat is surprisingly tame and hangs around in the background.
Finish: Mildly tannic, fruits fade leaving peat and smoke to linger for a bit. A touch of citrus adds an extra layer of juiciness that fights for attention with the peat
Score: 8.2
Scale:
S+ Sensational - The Pinnacle (9.5+)
A - AXEceptional (astounding) (9-9.5)
B - bravo (step aBove average) (8-8.9)
C - competent (7-7.9)
D - disappointing (6-6.9)
F - flush it down the toilet (fail) (5.9 below)
Notes: Availability? Common. Part of Compass Box's core line if they carry the brand they probably have this one
The Peat monster was a fun experience. The name alone makes you want to try it at least a little... doesn't it?
