Review #66 The Arran Malt 10yr: Scotch

Score: 7.3 / 10

Distillery: Arran

Type: Single Malt Scotch

Arran distillery is located in Lochranza, Scotland. Originally founded by the same director that used to work at Chivas. The distillery itself opened it's doors in 1995, but was delayed due to the fact that golden eagles built their nest there and construction had to be stopped due to the fact that they are a protected species. I have no idea whether that is bad or good luck... but we are sure going to find out right here in the review.

I think this is a pleasant Scotch, but unfortunately becomes less enjoyable from the nose to the finish. The nose is robust and flavorful, but the palate is less so and the finish leaves even more to be desired. Regardless, there is a pretty high comparison bar for scotch whisky in general. In general 10 years is on the young side for scotches due to the colder climate as well.

Served neat in a Glencairn glass - 46% alc/vol - 92 proof.

Whiskey Review:

Nose: Honeyed and bursting with pear, apple and lemongrass. A subtle but inviting German Pancake (butter, lemon and powdered sugar) scent lingers deeper in the glass.

Palate: Astringent overly ripe pear gives way to honey and vanilla. Light toasted sugar, oak and cinnamon become apparent in the second half of the drinking experience. The mouthfeel is light and oily.

Finish: Pretty short overall. Mildly tannic, light spice, oak and ethanol linger for a while.

Score: 7.3

Scale:

S+ Sensational - The Pinnacle (9.5+)

A - AXEceptional (astounding) (9-9.5)

B - bravo (step aBove average) (8-8.9)

C - competent (7-7.9)

D - disappointing (6-6.9)

F - flush it down the toilet (fail) (5.9 below)

Notes: Availability? Common. If it's coming in a shooter, it's pretty common. I think that's true in general except for the mini Blanton's. Those are just adorable. If you have not seen them check those out!
