Review #69 Rock Hill Farms: Bourbon

Score: 8.5 / 10

Distillery: Buffalo Trace

Type: Single Barrel Bourbon

This was one of the first whiskies I ever thoroughly reviewed and it was featured on the very first episode of our whiskey podcast Po It Up. I mean that's pretty famous already, probably why it is so hard to get. You can check out that episode here. The first one was a challenge with the audio and figuring this stuff out, but it only got better from there. Keep tuning in!

I have always enjoyed Rock Hill Farms (RHF) and loved it on premier episode. I ranked it a 9/10 but that was back before I had an official scale/rating system (its all proprietary anyways).

I still really enjoy this bourbon and its one of my favorites from Buffalo Trace's Mashbill #2 line (among Blanton's and Elmer T. Lee). Just don't get too attached to this stuff, because unless you have some serious hook ups, you'll likely never touch the bottle again. It's just the way allocated whiskey goes for arguably the best whiskey brand of brands.

Whiskey Review:

Nose: There is a potent ethanol that quickly disperses after pouring, which leaves a delightful chocolate chip cookie dough scent (vanilla, buttery brown sugar).

Palate: Buttery, creamy and very sweet at first, bubblegum flavor (artificial fruit/sugar) with a touch of spearmint then ramps up to a moderate cinnamon spice. An astringent orange rind, lemon zest and charred oak transforms on the back-end.

Finish: Medium in length. Lightly tannic leaving oak and toasted sugar with a hint of grapefruit.

Score: 8.5

Scale:

S+ Sensational - The Pinnacle (9.5+)

A - AXEceptional (astounding) (9-9.5)

B - bravo (step aBove average) (8-8.9)

C - competent (7-7.9)

D - disappointing (6-6.9)

F - flush it down the toilet (fail) (5.9 below)

Notes: Availability? Very Rare. If you are staring at this bottle in the store while reading this and it's under $150, you grab it now and two hand carry it like an NFL running back. Also, someone may be near you and ready to punch you in the face, so look out!
