Review #84 Knob Creek 12yr: Bourbon
Updated: Nov 27, 2020
Score: 8.4 / 10
Distillery: Jim Beam
Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Way back in my didn't know anything about whiskey days, I picked up Knob Creek. Just the flagship, no age statement or anything. I thought it was great and that was going to be my whiskey. Why would I need to buy anything else. Well I was wrong... and now I am going broke just like most people reading this. I'll help you did the hole even deeper. I have purchased this bottle 3 times already this year. Convinced?
Is it my favorite? Not really, but it's very solid and Id rather have it over most generic stuff. So if I see it in the store and don't really see anything else that I want, it usually ends up in the cart :) Same with Talisker 10yr, but that's off topic in a bourbon post. What was I thinking bringing that up. It's nice to enjoy something that is not an allocated whiskey for once.
Whiskey Review:
Nose: Thick caramel. Like a milk dud but possible to chew. floral notes with that classic "beam funk". Vanilla, brown sugar and a nice old dusty oak.
Palate: Soothing brown sugar heat, antique charred oak. heavy raisin taste, a bit earthy, leathery and medium tannic-ness.
Finish: Medium overall, lots of toasted oak. The leather continues to linger and dry out the mouth.
Score: 8.4
Scale:
S+ Sensational - The Pinnacle (9.5+)
A - AXEceptional (astounding) (9-9.5)
B - bravo (step aBove average) (8-8.9)
C - competent (7-7.9)
D - disappointing (6-6.9)
F - flush it down the toilet (fail) (5.9 below)
Notes: Availability? Uncommon. You'll need to be in a large liquor store to guarantee a bottle of this. While you're at it pick up the 15yr limited release. (no one wants it and it's dropping in price..... but it's actually really good). Great score for you!
It doesn't break the bank, and it doesn't disappoint. What else do you really need beyond that?
