We had a tour at Maker's Mark planned so we were going to drive down from Bardstown to Loretto, while we were making small talk with some new whiskey friends they mentioned swinging by Limestone to grab this bottle of Malted Red Wheat Bourbon from their experimental series. The distillery itself was very small and a little off the beaten path, but I am glad we swung by. I picked up two bottles of this for $26 each. This expression comes in at 53.42% and was aged for 17 months.

The distillery was founded in 2010 and they only offer a few expressions. This is something very unique to Limestone Branch Distillery (also where they make Yellowstone for you fans out there).

Now - on the to the review! Served neat in a Glencairn glass:

Whiskey Review:

Nose: Sweet corn, vanilla, caramel, fresh open field breeze, a hint of ground coffee and spiced oak.

Palate: Oily and juicy mouthfeel with lemon/orange rind upfront. This transitions quickly into delicate fruit and lemon citrus. The second half of the drinking experience highlights the malted vanilla and creamy caramel that leaves a zesty wheat spice.

Finish: Surprisingly tannic and short on the first sip. Diving deeper into the dram unveils a longer more moderate finish that leaves wheat, cinnamon and very light oak.

Notes: Availability? Uncommon. This was picked up at the distillery in Kentucky and I don't see it in most other states. You may need to look into where this is available if you are looking for a bottle of your own to enjoy and not planning any tours to the Bourbon motherland.
