Review #95 Four Roses Small Batch Select: Bourbon

Updated: Jan 10, 2021

Score: 8.3 / 10

Distillery: Four Roses

Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Much higher rye content than most bourbons of around 37%. So if you like ryes, you will like this. If you don't really like ryes, (sort of like me), it is a good transition to see if you might them without going all out. In fact, I post that argument for people looking to try a rye all the time in Facebook groups. For the price, this is the best whiskey that allows you do this.

I do actually like this whiskey. It is the right amount of rye for me. What I don't like is the name. I always want to find floral notes and rose notes and they are not there! Why would they be? That's not in whiskey! Still get's me every time though. Stupid marketing and suggestable names. I'll digress. Pick it up and enjoy!

Whiskey Review:

Nose: Caramel, charred oak, heavy rye spices, cherry, light anise

Palate: Rye spices are front and center. However, very soon after, there is a transition to cherry and cinnamon, finally turning into a tannic leather

Finish: Long. Rye spices come back, but are milder than before. Cinnamon starts to burn, but in a good way. Charred oak, and cherry stick around and linger.

Score: 8.3

Notes: Availability? Common. See above. Want to try a rye, but not sure? This is definitely for you. Get it anywhere. Even you're local round the corner store that smells like old food. Yep, it's there. No need to call.
